Shockwave Therapy Atlanta — Relief Wave™ Acoustic Wave Pain Treatment

FDA-cleared sound wave technology for chronic pain, stubborn injuries, and musculoskeletal conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy — also called acoustic wave therapy or extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) — uses pulsed sound waves to penetrate deep into injured tissue. At Taylor Medical Group in Atlanta, we use the Relief Wave™ system, an FDA-cleared technology designed for the treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain.

If you’ve been dealing with a stubborn injury or chronic pain that hasn’t responded to physical therapy, cortisone shots, or rest, shockwave therapy may be the piece you’ve been missing. It’s non-surgical, non-invasive, and doesn’t require anesthesia or downtime.

Shockwave therapy has been used in Europe for decades and has a strong track record for conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and rotator cuff injuries — exactly the kind of persistent musculoskeletal problems that don’t respond well to standard treatment. We see patients from Sandy Springs, Atlanta, Dunwoody, Buckhead, Brookhaven, and Chamblee.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

The Relief Wave™ device delivers focused, pulsed acoustic energy directly to the injured area through the skin. You don’t need incisions, injections, or sedation. A handheld applicator is pressed against your skin over the treatment area, and the sound waves travel into the tissue beneath.

Here’s what those sound waves do inside your body:

Breaks Up Scar Tissue

Chronic injuries build up scar tissue and calcified deposits around tendons and ligaments. Shockwave energy physically disrupts these adhesions — breaking them apart so your body can clear the debris and heal the underlying tissue properly.

Stimulates New Blood Vessel Growth

Shockwave therapy triggers the formation of new blood vessels (neovascularization) in poorly perfused tissue. Better blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients getting to the area — which is what allows chronic injuries to finally heal.

Stimulates Collagen Production

Sound waves signal your body to produce new collagen — the structural protein that makes up tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue. This helps rebuild tissue that has broken down from chronic overuse or injury.

Reduces Pain Signaling

Shockwave therapy decreases substance P — a neurotransmitter that amplifies pain signals. Reducing substance P lowers your local pain response without the systemic effects of pain medication. Some patients notice immediate relief; most see full results over 6 to 8 weeks as the tissue heals.

Releases Trigger Points

Trigger points are tight, painful knots in muscle tissue that can cause local pain and referred pain elsewhere in the body. Shockwave therapy releases these trigger points mechanically — without needles or injections.

Reverses Chronic Inflammation

In chronic injury, the normal inflammatory healing cycle gets stuck. Shockwave therapy restarts the process — converting chronic, stalled inflammation into the active, productive healing phase your body needs to repair tissue.

What to Expect at Your Shockwave Therapy Appointment

1

Evaluation

We start by reviewing your injury history, what you’ve tried before, and where you’re feeling pain. We identify the specific structures involved — tendon, ligament, muscle, fascia — and determine whether shockwave therapy is the right tool for your situation.

2

Treatment

A gel is applied to your skin over the treatment area. The Relief Wave™ applicator is pressed against the skin, and you’ll feel a series of rapid pulses — often described as a tapping or clicking sensation against the tissue. Treatment is patient-guided: we adjust intensity based on your feedback throughout the session. A typical session runs 10 to 30 minutes.

3

Frequency

Most patients come in 1 to 2 times per week. A typical course of treatment is 3 to 6 sessions, followed by maintenance visits as needed. Some patients notice improvement immediately after the first treatment; others build results over 6 to 8 weeks as tissue heals and remodels. We’ll give you a realistic timeline based on what we find.

4

After Your Session

You can return to normal daily activity right away. We’ll advise you on activity modifications during your treatment course and may recommend supportive supplements — such as collagen peptides or anti-inflammatory nutrients — from Taylor MD Formulations to support tissue recovery.

Are There Side Effects?

Shockwave therapy has a very favorable safety profile. Side effects are limited and typically mild:

  • Redness or skin irritation at the treatment site — usually resolves within hours
  • Mild soreness in the area for 24 to 48 hours after treatment — this is a normal part of the healing process
  • Occasional minor bruising in sensitive areas

Some patients feel more sore in the day or two after their first session as the tissue responds to treatment. This typically improves with each subsequent visit. In cases of significant inflammation after treatment, we may prescribe a short course of anti-inflammatory medication to help.

Shockwave therapy is not appropriate for patients with blood clotting disorders, active cancer at the treatment site, open wounds, or those who are pregnant. We review your health history before treatment to make sure it’s the right fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shockwave therapy the same as ultrasound therapy?

No — they’re different technologies. Ultrasound therapy uses continuous low-energy sound waves primarily to warm tissue and reduce mild inflammation. Shockwave therapy uses high-energy pulsed acoustic waves that physically disrupt scar tissue, stimulate collagen production, and trigger neovascularization. The effects go significantly deeper and produce structural tissue changes that ultrasound doesn’t.

How long until I see results?

Some patients feel improvement after the first session. But the real healing response — new blood vessel growth, collagen remodeling, scar tissue breakdown — takes 6 to 8 weeks to complete. Most patients see the full benefit by the end of their treatment course, with continued improvement afterward as the tissue finishes healing.

Does it hurt during the treatment?

Most patients describe it as a strong tapping or pressure sensation — not exactly comfortable, but tolerable. Intensity is adjusted throughout the session based on your feedback. Patients with very sensitive or inflamed tissue may feel more during the first session, with each subsequent session becoming more comfortable as inflammation reduces.

Can shockwave therapy be combined with other treatments?

Yes, and it often works better as part of a broader treatment plan. We sometimes combine shockwave therapy with IV nutrient therapy to support tissue healing from the inside, and with functional medicine evaluation to identify systemic issues (like chronic inflammation or hormone imbalance) that may be slowing recovery.

Do you offer shockwave therapy near Buckhead or Dunwoody?

We’re located in Sandy Springs, right off I-285 — easily accessible from Buckhead, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, and Chamblee. Most of our north Atlanta patients are with us in 15 to 20 minutes. Get directions here.

What if I’ve already had surgery and still have pain?

Post-surgical pain and scar tissue are among the conditions where shockwave therapy can be especially useful. Surgery often leaves adhesions and disrupted tissue that doesn’t fully resolve on its own. Shockwave can break down that residual scar tissue and restart healing in areas that have stalled. We evaluate each case individually — explore our full range of integrative medicine services to see how we approach complex pain cases.
