The Importance of Water and Hydration

Water and Hydration

Water is important for our health because it makes up about 50-70 percent of our body weight. It is crucial for most body functions.  Water acts as a transportation vehicle for nutrients, electrolytes, blood cells, antibodies, enzymes, hormones, glucose, and metabolic waste.  Blood, which is ninety percent water, is not just a  vehicle of transport in the body, but also as fluid tissue blood that structurally supports blood vessels that would collapse in its absence and many other organ systems such as the brain, heart, lungs, muscle, liver, and skin. Every organ system is affected by water or the lack thereof.  Hydration is crucial for even the simplest chemical reactions in the body.

Hydration is required for even the most basic chemical reactions.  Water is an ideal environment for chemical reactions because of its ph and ability to store a large amount of heat caused by chemical reactions.  It is involved in many enzymatic reactions by breaking chemical bonds or, by its removal from a molecule, to new form bonds.

Cellular hydration is necessary for the body to function optimally.  The body’s ability to create and burn energy is diminished when hydration is diminished. Increasing hydration allows cells to restore glucose transport across the cell membrane and increase their sensitivity to insulin which improves the body’s ability to lose weight.  On the other hand, dehydration causes cells to shrinks, slow down their metabolism and burn fewer calories.

Water acts as a lubricant and as a shock absorber. Mucus is primarily made up of water. Mucus is needed to discharge nasal irritants,  trapping pathogens, breathing, transportation of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract, and elimination of waste.

Water is the main component of the lubricating fluid between joints and eases the movement of bone joints. It fills the extra space in the eyes and the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord and buffers these organs against sudden changes in the environment.  Hydration also helps regulate body temperature known as thermoregulation which balances the amount of heat gained and lost by the body. Hydration is important for our health and wellness. Dehydration can make you feel sick, tired, and lead to health problems. Get hydrated today!
