Metabolic Testing Atlanta — Nutritional Deficiency & Metabolic Analysis
Advanced lab testing that shows how your body actually uses nutrients at the cellular level
Why Standard Blood Work Isn’t Enough
Your annual blood work comes back “normal” — but you still feel exhausted, foggy, and run down. Sound familiar? That’s because standard blood tests only measure what’s floating in your blood at that moment. They don’t tell you if your cells are actually using those nutrients.
Think about it this way: your blood might have enough vitamin D floating around, but if your cells can’t absorb and use it, you’re still functionally deficient. That’s the gap standard testing misses — and it’s exactly what our metabolic and nutritional testing fills.
At Taylor Medical Group in Sandy Springs, we use two of the most advanced metabolic testing platforms in functional medicine — SpectraCell Micronutrient Testing and the Genova Diagnostics Organix Comprehensive Profile. Together, they give us a complete picture of how your body produces energy, uses nutrients, handles toxins, and maintains cellular function.
If you’re in Atlanta, Dunwoody, Buckhead, Brookhaven, or Sandy Springs and you want real answers — not a 5-minute visit and a prescription — this is how we start.
SpectraCell Micronutrient Testing
The SpectraCell Micronutrient Test is unlike anything you’ll get at a typical doctor’s office. Instead of measuring what’s in your blood serum (which only gives a snapshot of that day), SpectraCell measures how your white blood cells are actually using 31 different vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. It reflects your nutritional status over the past 4 to 6 months — not just what you ate yesterday.
Here’s why that matters: about half of people taking a daily multivitamin are still functionally deficient in at least one nutrient. Their blood levels look fine on paper, but their cells aren’t absorbing or using those nutrients properly. SpectraCell catches what serum tests miss.
What SpectraCell Measures:
B Vitamins
B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, folate, pantothenate, and biotin. These drive your energy production, brain function, nerve health, and red blood cell formation. Low B vitamins are one of the most common things we find — and one of the easiest to fix.
Minerals
Calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and manganese. Magnesium alone is involved in over 300 reactions in your body — from muscle relaxation to sleep to heart rhythm. Most Americans are deficient and don’t know it.
Antioxidants
Glutathione, CoQ10, vitamin E, selenium, alpha-lipoic acid, and cysteine. These protect your cells from damage. Low antioxidant levels speed up aging, weaken your immune system, and increase inflammation.
Other Key Nutrients
Vitamin D3, vitamin A, vitamin K2, choline, inositol, carnitine, oleic acid, and chromium. Plus a unique Spectrox score (total antioxidant function) and Immunidex score (immune response). No other test measures all of this in one panel.
The report color-codes every nutrient as deficient (red), borderline (yellow), or adequate (green) — so you can see at a glance where you need help. It also includes specific supplement recommendations with dosages.
Genova Organix Comprehensive Metabolic Profile
If SpectraCell tells us what you’re deficient in, the Genova Organix profile tells us why. This urine-based test measures organic acids — byproducts your body produces as it digests food, makes energy, processes brain chemicals, and clears toxins. When those pathways aren’t working right, specific organic acids pile up in your urine. That tells us exactly which metabolic pathways are blocked and what nutrients your body needs to get them running again.
The Organix Profile Evaluates:
Energy Production
Are your mitochondria working? The Organix test checks the Krebs cycle, fatty acid oxidation, and carbohydrate metabolism. If your cells can’t make energy efficiently, you’ll feel tired no matter how much you sleep.
Neurotransmitter Metabolism
This test measures the breakdown products of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. If these pathways are sluggish, it can show up as depression, anxiety, insomnia, or brain fog — before standard psych tests would catch it.
Detoxification Capacity
How well is your body clearing toxins? The Organix profile checks your oxidative stress markers, glutathione status, and liver detox pathways. If your detox pathways are overloaded, toxins build up and cause all kinds of problems.
B-Vitamin & Mineral Needs
Organic acid levels reveal your functional need for specific B-vitamins and mineral cofactors — even when serum levels look normal. This is one of the best ways to catch hidden deficiencies.
Gut Bacterial & Yeast Markers
Certain organic acids are produced by bacteria and yeast in your gut. Elevated levels can point to dysbiosis or Candida overgrowth — even without digestive symptoms. This gives us a metabolic window into gut health.
Oxalate Metabolism
High oxalate levels can indicate problems with kidney stone risk, oxidative stress, or metabolic dysfunction. This marker is especially relevant for patients with a history of kidney stones or joint pain.
The collection is simple — it’s a first-morning urine sample you collect at home and mail in. Results include a personalized supplement schedule based on exactly what your body needs.
DUTCH Complete Hormone Test
The DUTCH test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) is the gold standard for understanding how your body makes, uses, and breaks down hormones. Standard blood tests only show your total hormone levels at one moment in time. The DUTCH test shows us the full picture — your hormone levels and how your body metabolizes them over a full 24-hour cycle.
This is especially important for patients on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. The DUTCH test monitors oral progesterone, vaginal creams, patches, and pellets more accurately than blood or saliva tests alone.
What the DUTCH Test Measures:
Sex Hormones & Metabolites
Estrogen (estrone, estradiol, estriol), progesterone metabolites, testosterone, DHEA-S, and androgen metabolites. Plus it shows how your body is processing estrogen — whether down protective pathways or pathways that could increase risk for hormone-related issues.
Cortisol & Adrenal Function
Daily free cortisol pattern, cortisone levels, and the cortisol awakening response (CAR). This tells us if chronic stress has worn down your adrenal glands — a common driver of fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, and weight gain around the midsection.
Melatonin
Your body makes melatonin about 2 hours before bedtime. If your levels are low, that explains why you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep — and it gives us a clear target for treatment.
Organic Acid Markers (OATs)
Includes markers for vitamin B12, B6, glutathione status, oxidative stress (8-OHdG), and neurotransmitter metabolites for dopamine and norepinephrine. This rounds out the hormone picture with nutritional and brain health insights.
Collection is done at home — you saturate four or five filter cards with urine samples over a 24-hour period, let them dry, and mail them in. Results come back in about 2 to 3 weeks with a detailed graphical report.
Why We Use These Tests Together
Each test answers a different question — and together they give us the full story:
SpectraCell tells us: “Your cells are deficient in magnesium, CoQ10, and vitamin B6.”
Organix tells us: “Your mitochondria aren’t producing energy well, your serotonin pathway is sluggish, and your liver detox is overloaded — those deficiencies are why.”
DUTCH tells us: “Your estrogen is metabolizing down a risky pathway, your cortisol is crashed by afternoon, and your progesterone is too low — that’s why you can’t sleep and you’re gaining weight.”
Now we know exactly what to fix and exactly how to fix it. We’re not throwing a handful of supplements at you and hoping something sticks. We’re targeting the specific pathways that need support, with the specific nutrients and hormones that will make the biggest difference.
This is what functional medicine looks like when it’s done right. Test. Don’t guess.
Who Needs Metabolic & Nutritional Testing?
If any of this sounds like you, metabolic testing can give you the answers your regular labs haven’t:
Chronic Fatigue
Brain Fog
Depression & Anxiety
Weight You Can’t Lose
Poor Sleep
Weak Immune System
Hair Loss
Hormone Imbalances
Digestive Problems
Autoimmune Conditions
Muscle Cramps & Pain
Anti-Aging & Longevity
We also run these tests for patients who want to get ahead of problems before they start. If you’re focused on longevity and anti-aging, knowing your cellular nutrient status is one of the smartest things you can do.
How Testing & Treatment Works
1
Consultation & Lab Orders
Meet with one of our doctors to go over your symptoms, history, and goals. We’ll decide which tests make sense for you — SpectraCell, Organix, or both. Some patients also benefit from hormone testing at the same time.
2
Sample Collection
SpectraCell requires a simple blood draw (two tubes, no fasting). Organix is a first-morning urine sample you collect at home. Both are straightforward and painless.
3
Results Review
SpectraCell results take about 2 to 3 weeks. Organix is similar. We sit down with you and walk through everything — what’s deficient, what’s borderline, what it means, and what we’re going to do about it.
4
Targeted Treatment
Your treatment plan might include targeted supplementation from Taylor MD Formulations, diet changes, IV nutrient therapy for rapid correction, hormone balancing, or lifestyle adjustments. Everything is based on your actual lab data.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the bloodwork my regular doctor does?
Standard bloodwork measures what’s floating in your blood serum at that moment. SpectraCell measures how your cells have been using nutrients over the past 4 to 6 months. Organix measures your metabolic pathways — how well your body is producing energy, processing brain chemicals, and detoxifying. These are completely different layers of information that standard labs don’t touch.
Do I need both tests?
Not always. Some patients only need one. During your consultation, we’ll decide based on your symptoms and health goals. If you’re dealing with multiple issues — fatigue, brain fog, mood problems, and gut issues — running both gives us the most complete picture.
Will my insurance cover these tests?
Coverage varies by plan. SpectraCell and Genova both work with some insurance carriers, but many of our patients choose to pay out of pocket. We can provide you with cost details during your consultation.
How often should I retest?
We usually retest after about 6 months of treatment to see how your levels have changed. For some patients, annual retesting is enough for ongoing maintenance. The goal is to correct deficiencies, verify they stay corrected, and adjust as needed.
Can IV therapy help correct deficiencies faster?
Yes. When we find severe deficiencies — especially in patients with gut issues that affect absorption — IV vitamin therapy can correct them much faster than oral supplements alone. Your body absorbs close to 100% of what we give through an IV, compared to 20-30% from a pill.
I eat healthy and take supplements. Do I still need this?
You might be surprised. Eating well is a great start, but it doesn’t guarantee your cells are absorbing and using everything properly. Stress, medications, gut issues, genetics, and age all affect nutrient utilization. Many of the patients we test are health-conscious people who are still deficient in key nutrients. The only way to know is to test.
Find Out What Your Cells Actually Need
Stop supplementing blindly. Our metabolic testing in Atlanta tells you exactly what’s deficient and exactly how to fix it. We see patients from Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Buckhead, Brookhaven, and Chamblee.
